Skala Eresos ...

Mulbery trees forming an imposing green arch, line the 4km long boulevard between Eresos to Skala. This road goes cuts through the verdurous Eressian plain with its well-groomed gardens, water in abundance and beautiful cottages, and ends up in Skala Kalloni with its famous 2,5 km long beach. The crystal clear blue waters and fine-grained grey sandy beach impresses even the most demanding visitor. The beach was awarded the European “Blue Flag” prize for being the cleanest beach in the EU; a prize it hold to this day.

With the hillock of Vigla as its left boundary, the site on which the ancient Acropolis of Eresos was located, and the rock on which the chapel of the Prophet Ilias was built on the right, the beach of Skala is suitable for a variety of activities. Here one can enjoy water sports such as canoeing, trips on waterbikes, wind-surfing, or play rackets and volleyball on the beach. Picturesque coffee houses, well-run restaurants with local delicacies, and elegant bars built on wooden platforms which are a breath away from the crystal clear waters, promise moments of tranquility but also lively merrymaking. Furthermore, enjoyable greek nights with life music are organised by many music halls along the beach.

Sunset in Eresos is a moment of unique beauty. The surrounding hills reflect the rosy colour of the sky and create a captivating contrast with the blue of the sky. Visitors can savour the alternating colours of the horizon from the colourful square of Skala, with a view of the nearby islet in the distance. Moonlight lends the waters a “silver” shade and discretely illuminates the quaint small port of Skala, bringing to mind verses of the poetess Sappho ‘...when the sun has set and the glimmering red moon has risen causing the surrounding stars to fade away, the glimmering light radiates over the salty waters of the Aegean Sea and the fields of many flowers ...’ (translation by Odysseas Elytis 1985:91)
