These mineral springs are mainly the manifestation of an acute endogenous volcanic activity eventuating in the Tertiary Period.

Although the majority of springs are not inferior to those of Europe, as far as their therapeutic efficacy is concerned, they suffer low attendance due to primitive amenities - but for a few exceptions - thus constituting them important only to local use. The importance of these natural springs is illustrated in the writings of Xaverius Landerer, a German who visited Lesvos in 1845 and conducted studies on the therapeutic properties of the waters. He informs us that Galene also praised their virtues.

Moreover, the doctor, philosopher and botanist Theophrastos of Eressos and Aristides Aelios further recount the significance of the mineral water springs of Lesvos.

The mineral spring of Therma located in the Bay of Geras, alternatively named "Baths of Korfo", is situated west of the town of Mytilene. The site of the spring and the peripheral area surrounding the Bay of Geras, also known as the bay o Ieras or the Bay of Olive Tress, is considered to be most advantageous. This particular location is believed to be the site of the temple o Hera, where ancient Lesvides participated in beauty pageant rituals.

Indications: These mineral springs contain radium and are additionally recommended for the cure of diseased of the female genital organs, gravel, rheumatics, arthritis, bronchitis, intestinal diseases, sugar diabetes, neurasthenia, and gall stones.

Apart from the previously mentioned ailments the spring waters are recommended for the cure of rheumatism, sciatica of the hip joint, chronic rheumatism, skin diseases of an arthritic nature, illnesses of the womb, intestinal diseases, bronchial diseases and more.

Within this area, at an altitude of 60m above sea level, along a stretch of 3,5km and close to the banks of the rivulet Almyropotamos, gush forth five mineral springs of which only three are utilised: two are administered by the municipality, whilst the third falls under the auspices of the Christianos family. Furthermore, small quantities of tepid water dot the area from which a salty efflorescence or a yellow residue remain after evaporation. This alluvium consists of a ferrous calcium carbonate composition. In the course of winter the springs are visible from a distance due to extensive volumes of vapour rising from them, at a temperature of 87,6^o C.

The spring nearer to the Spa is thought to be one of the hottest, not only amongst those of Greece but also amongst the springs of Continental Europe. The hottest of European springs are the following:

The mineral water spring of Eftalou is situated on he north shore of the island, east of Methymne (Molivos) and north-west of the town of Mytilene. This corner of Lesvos, where the mineral springs are situated, is admittedly beautiful, having many advantages, as compared with other sites on the island. Natural beauty, sandy shores a sweeping horizon on the expansive sea, everything in abundance, nature's offering. Eftalou was the loving home of the renowned scholar Kleanthes Michaelides, who under the pen name Argyris Eftaliotes immortalised Eftalou in his poems and short stories.
